India Set to Lead Kimberley Process in 2026

29 Dec 2025

Election underscores international confidence in India’s role in strengthening conflict-free diamond trade governance

India has been elected to chair the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) in 2026, a development welcomed by the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), which serves as the nodal agency for the Kimberley Process in the country. India will assume the Chair’s role from January 1, 2026, following consensus approval granted through a written procedure completed in December 2025.

Ahead of this, India will take on the position of Vice Chair in 2025, effective December 25, 2025, enabling a smooth transition into the leadership role. A founding participant of the Kimberley Process, India’s elevation reflects sustained international trust in its governance and regulatory approach to the global rough diamond trade.

The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme is a UN-mandated initiative that regulates international trade in rough diamonds with the objective of preventing conflict diamonds from entering legitimate markets. It remains the only global framework dedicated to overseeing this critical segment of the diamond industry. The Kimberley Process currently includes 60 participants representing 80 countries, with the European Union participating as a single member.

Commenting on the announcement, GJEPC Chairman Kirit Bhansali said the selection highlights the global community’s confidence in India’s principled and inclusive approach to managing the Kimberley Process. He noted that India’s leadership will focus on strengthening governance mechanisms and reinforcing trust in the global diamond supply chain.

Bhansali further emphasized that GJEPC will work in close coordination with the Government of India and all relevant stakeholders to support India’s Vice Chairmanship and subsequent Chairmanship. The council reiterated its commitment to promoting best practices, enhancing compliance standards, and ensuring the continued credibility of conflict-free diamonds in international markets.

GJEPC also stated that it will actively engage with governments, international trade organizations, and civil society groups to support India’s leadership and contribute to the long-term stability and effectiveness of the Kimberley Process.
